Lipoid Metabolism in T H E Developing Chick

چکیده
PLATES 59 AND 60. While working with a chick embryo of nineteen days' incubation, my attention was attracted by the brilliant yellow color of the liver. The color was like that o f the adrenal cortex, or the corpus luteum, and this resemblance impelled me to investigate more closely the condition of the liver cells. A small fragment of the liver was teased and examined between the Nicol prisms of a polarizing microscope. The result is illustrated by figure I. With the Nicol prisms uncrossed the field was filled with many small, rather refrac-tile d,roplets (figure I, A), and these upon crossing the prisms exhibited with great clearness and beauty the phenomenon of double refractivity (figure i, B). Sudan III was now added to the preparation and the droplets gradually stained a vivid yellowish red. It was clear, then, that the liver of the chick embryo of nineteen days incubation contained an abundance of fatty matter of an anisotro-pic lipoidal nature. This discovery was quite surprising, for as far as I am aware, the occurrence of anisotropic lipoids in the paren-chyma cells of the liver has never been described. Much has been written within recent years concerning the physical and chemical properties of the so called lipoids, and a great deal has been learned in regard to their physiological and pathological occurrences in the body. I need not review even the principal contributions to the subject at this time, for the writings of Adami

Lipoid Metabolism in the Developing Chick and Its Relation to Calcification
The liver of the embryo chick during the first two weeks of development contains an abundance of isotropic fatty globules which represent a mixture of lipoids in which phosphorized fats predominate. During the third week of incubation the fatty globules in the liver change their physical and chemical characters. They become anisotropic and exhibit the reactions and properties of esters of chole...
متن کاملThe Metabolism of Serum Proteins in the Hen and Chick and Secretion of Serum Proteins by the Ovary of the Hen
In the chicken, serum gamma globulin (CGG) is preferentially transferred by the follicular epithelium of the ovary to the developing ova. The concentration of gamma globulin in the yolk of the unfertilized egg is many times the concentration of chicken serum albumin (CSA). This transfer occurs largely during the 4 to 5 days preceding ovulation when the growth of the ovum is most rapid. Thus, in...

متن کاملQuantitative Analysis of GABAA Gamma Receptor Subunits in the Developing Embryonic Chick Forebrain
Objective(s) In this study we investigated the expression of GABAA receptor subunits during brain development. These receptors may change in the embryonic chick forebrain. Materials and Methodes The expression levels of four types of GABAA receptor gamma subunits (γ1, γ2, γ3 and γ4) were quantified in the embryonic chick forebrain at 32 hr, 3, 7, 14, and 20 days of incubation and day one aft...
